Global platform companies have strengthened their financial and technological positions in the Nordic media markets over the past five years, according to the report Nordic News Media in Global Competition, which is now available in English. The report is presented today at a conference organised as part of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

A clear majority of digital advertising in the Nordic region is now invested in global platform companies rather than domestic media, according to the report Nordic News Media in Global Competition: The Conditions for News Journalism in the Digital Platform Economy, which is now available in English.

Tobias Lindberg, researcher at Nordicom and author of the report, presents it today at a conference concerning the impact of EU platform regulation on democratic discourse and media policy, which is part of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

“I’m going to talk about the transformation that the Nordic news media companies have gone through in recent years – with particular focus on the advertising and consumer markets, and the digital infrastructure. I will also speak briefly about the challenges that the digital development creates for both the media companies and the Nordic societies”, says Lindberg.

The report was first published in Swedish by Nordicom and the Nordic Council of ministers. The slightly condensed English translation has been funded by the European Union and published in cooperation with the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2023.
